Barriers to connectedness: wired but disconnected?

There is evidence that the financial crisis has led to a slowdown of globalisation, connectedness and economic integration. According to the DHL Global Connectedness Index 2012, the global connectedness of the world today is than it was in 2007 and still has to reach pre-crisis levels, with capital connectedness declining and service trades remaining stagnant since 2007 (Ghemawat and Altman, 2012). There is additional evidence that suggests that financial deepening (the expansion of financial markets and banking systems) and globalisation (as measured by financial integration and cross-border capital flows) have stalled as a result of the crisis (McKinsey Global Institute, 2013).

There is an implicit narrative about how the future will look: the big advances will be in “hard” disciplines like digital technology or material science. After all, some of our most spectacular successes in recent history, from space travel to the internet to smartphones, have been founded on work in these hard disciplines. This, it is said, is why education in the STEM fields is of utmost importance, because those will be the jobs of the future. The common vision of the future is of gleaming computers and sterile glass and steel constructions. But perhaps we are at an inflexion point, and rumblings of this change are already starting to become visible.

There has been some development of algorithms and software for knowledge engineering at the juncture of learning system and cognitive psychology theories and research on artificial intelligence. Knowledge engineering extends concepts that were previously – in research on artificial intelligence – only applicable to computers (machine learning) to any learning system (where learning is understood to mean the acquisition and transformation of knowledge with a view to its application). The year 2012 unfolds with wide disparities in potential outcomes in many economies, and little prospect of a coordinated turnaround. Just 15% of CEOs believe that the global economy will improve this year (see Figure 2). Incremental improvements in business optimism seen in the PwC 15th Annual Global CEO Survey over the past two years are reversing. In a sign of converging economic fortunes, confidence declined in parallel among CEOs across all regions, except for the Middle East and Africa.
