Implantable Drug-Making Cells - Releasing drugs directly into patients’ bodies as they are needed is fast becoming feasible
Many people with diabetes prick their fingers several times a day to measure blood sugar levels and decide on the insulin doses they need. Implants of pancreatic cells that normally make insulin in the body— so-called islet cells—can render this cumbersome process unnecessary. Likewise, cellular implants could transform treatment of other disorders, including cancer, heart failure, hemophilia, glaucoma and Parkinson’s disease. But cellular implants have a major drawback: recipients must take immunosuppressants indefinitely to prevent rejection by the immune system. Such drugs can lead to serious side effects, including an increased risk of infection or malignancies.

As richer nations grow increasingly hostile to the idea of welcoming refugees, migrants pour into developing countries with more porous borders, who already host 85% of the world’s refugees. “Countries that are weak, don't have the money, or don't have the ability to police, are the ones that are usually right on the borders of a lot of these refugee crises to begin with,” Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, says. Millions of Venezuelans have already left their country and ended up in Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador or Peru — a crisis on par with Syria’s — while 3% of Uganda’s population is made up of refugees from South Sudan or the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Immersive Technologies – Enhancing the Digital Experience
Two distinct but merging technologies are behind immersive technologies: Virtual Reality (VR), computer- generated, digital environments that fully immerse users in a virtual world and Augmented Reality (AR), which overlays digital information on the physical world and augmented reality operating environments. Companies are already experimenting in pilot projects and the technology has the potential to become the next computing platform. Mobile devices are currently at the center of the implementation of AR/ VR and they could replace large parts of the PC landscape. We observe a co-evolution with digital twins and gaming. Hardware is important, but the user experience such as ease and comfort of use and real-time performance as well as a structured content are keys for success. High data quality including realtime analytics is also a prerequisite. Immersive Technologies are still in early development and are five to ten years from wide mainstream adoption. They currently show a slower adoption than smartphones but will probably experience a similar cost reduction and speed up significantly cost reduction and development speed. Hardware vendors are accelerating computing and speeding up application performance and vendors are already developing and offering enterprise-level collaboration tools and augmented reality operating environments. For now, the clumsiness of the current devices has reduced mobility and the cost for adopting content are slowing progress and cybersecurity and safety of usage remain issues. Immersive technologies promise unique user experiences including 3D interactions, new ways of data handling, and interaction with the physical world and has the potential to accelerate and simplify business practices or even invent new ones. Use cases are hands-free tasks like in field service and maintenance, digital twins for operations, architecture, real-estate etc., live media streams, and augmented information for any digital supported workplace.

Through 2028, conversational platforms, which change how users interact with the world, and technologies such as augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR), which change how users perceive the world, will lead to a new immersive experience. AR, MR and VR show potential for increased productivity, with the next generation of VR able to sense shapes and track a user’s position and MR enabling people to view and interact with their world.  By 2022, 70% of enterprises will be experimenting with immersive technologies for consumer and enterprise use, and 25% will have deployed to production. The future of conversational platforms, which range from virtual personal assistants to chatbots, will incorporate expanded sensory channels that will allow the platform to detect emotions based on facial expressions, and they will become more conversational in interactions. Eventually, the technology and thinking will shift to a point where the experience will connect people with hundreds of edge devices ranging from computers to cars.
